Why This Spot Stands Out

A Celebration of Winter Fun and Culture

Winterlude kicks off this Friday, January 31st, 2025, and runs until February 17th. Every weekend promises unique and exciting experiences, ensuring there’s always something new to explore whether you attend once or every weekend

A Celebration Rooted in History

First held in 1979, Winterlude was created by the National Capital Commission (NCC) to honor Canada’s northern culture and embrace the joys of winter. Inspired by early settlers who came together during the cold months, Winterlude began as a way to bring people together.

One of the event’s original highlights was “Trotting on the Rideau,” a horse race on the iconic Rideau Canal Skateway. Over the years, the festival has grown, introducing fan favorites like the Bed Race and the Waiters and Waitresses on Ice Challenge.

A Winter Wonderland for All

Winterlude has become a signature event in Canada’s Capital Region, drawing an average of 600,000 visitors annually. This spectacular festival thrives thanks to the dedication of over 800 volunteers and the collaboration of many local partners.

From skating on the Rideau Canal to visiting the intricate snow and ice sculptures, Winterlude offers a wonderful winter experience for all. Guests can also enjoy tube sliding and cultural events that highlight the region’s rich traditions.

Where to Go and What to Do

The festival spans Ottawa and Gatineau, with major hubs including:

  • Snowflake Kingdom: snow slides and activities for children and families.
  • Sparks Street: filled with entertainment and events.
  • ByWard Market: A cozy spot for food, shopping, and warmth.
