Question of the week:

Our most unusual “Nick Answers Reddit” yet: How do I thank an exceptional Realtor?

A variation of this question has come up three or four times in the past week alone on Reddit:

What would be a nice thing to do for a real estate agent that has repeatedly done an exceptional job? I would like to show sincere gratitude to my agent who has had a significant positive impact on the life of myself and my family through his work.

Nick's Response

A similar question came up a week or so ago where a homeowner asked if they should reciprocate something for the closing gift that their Realtor gave to them. I’m a Realtor (obviously my opinion is biased) but my response to your question is similar to that one:

In short, we’re not expecting a gift from you and what’s the most meaningful to us is to know that we’ve made a positive impact on your life and your family, and that you appreciate the relationship that we’ve built together.

If your time working with your Realtor has been a great experience for you, then it was probably a good experience for your Realtor. If he’s a good Realtor he appreciates the professional relationship that you’ve built and even just expressing your gratitude will probably make a big impact on him. If you’d like to do something more tangible, the most meaningful things that you could do for him down the road would be:

  • Be vocal to friends and family about the experience you had working with him when real estate is mentioned.

  • A Google review or (especially) a video review. Those help us meet more people like the clients we’ve enjoyed working with.

  • An invitation to the housewarming party, if you’ve just moved. Introduce him to others as your Realtor.

  • A handwritten note. This business is often stressful, and I’ve kept every nice note that a client has written for me. I’m sure your Realtor would appreciate that if you wanted to write one.

I’m glad to hear that you’ve had a great experience!
